With renovation complete, four-hundred-year-old Chenxiangge nunnery, the largest convent in Shanghai, is emitting its distinctive woody fragrance once again. Surrounded by one of Shanghai’s most popular tourism magnets---the City God Temple, Old Shanghai Street and Yuyuan shopping complex----the convent miraculously maintained a measure of serenity and seclusion amidst the commercial cacophony. Less well-known than the city’s other temples, the convent has an enchanting history.
In 1990 the nunnery’s present abbess, Guan Xin, went to Thailand in search of a block of eaglewood similar to the one used to carve the original a block of Bodhisattva Guanyin. Fortunately, one was found and shipped to Shanghai, and the Longhua Temple.
The statue resembles the original both in craftsmanship and appearance: the God looks serene and peaceful. He has one foot bent slightly upward, one hand resting on the knee, and the other draped over the back of a chair. During the rainy season, the distinctive scent of eaglewood still fills the Guanyin Hall.
