People’s Mansion

People’s Mansion is majestically standing in the middle of the People’s Square. It serves as the office of Shanghai Municipal government.

People’s Mansion was building in 1995. Covering an area of 35.700 square meters, the main building is 75 meters high, with 18 floors above the ground and one underground. Besides, there are skirt buildings attached to the main building on both sides. Designed by Shanghai Architectural Design Institute, People’s Mansion is simple in style but no less elegant. White is the tone of the color scheme of the main building, symbolizing the purity and honesty of Shanghai government. The protruding part of the main building is an inspection platform, under which is the entrance gate. On the exterior of the skirt buildings, one can see more than 20 columns on top of which are engraved the pattern of Shanghai city flower---magnolia.

People’s Mansion was originally named “City Administration Hall”. In1997, it was changed into “People’s Mansion” after adopting the proposal of local citizens. In their proposal, the citizens presented three reasons for the change: First, the government is one of the people, by the people and for the people. Second, it is located in the People’s Square. Third, both the avenue running in front of the building and the park behind it carry the word “people” in their names. Thus, “People’s Mansion” would be the most suitable name for this city hall.

People’s Mansion and the new City Administration Building make the People’s Square the political center of Shanghai.
