Shanghai Art Museum

At 325 Nanjing Road West at the northwest corner of the People’s Square, you will find the Shanghai Art Museum.

Shanghai Art Museum was founded in 1956. It is a museum of contemporary arts. It has a collection of more than 8,000 works, which dates from the beginning of the twentieth century, These exhibits include oil paintings, traditional Chinese paintings, engraved paintings, water-color paintings, sculptures, ect. Most of them are works of famous Chinese artists and prize-winners in the domestic art exhibitions.

In the past 50 years, Shanghai Art Gallery has also held many famous exhibitions of works of domestic and foreign artists, such as Qi Baishi Work Exhibition, Xu Beihong Work Exhibition and Picasso Original Work Exhibition, to name just a few. Among all the exhibitions, Shanghai Biennial Art Exhibition is the most influential both at home and abroad.

Now, the gallery boasts 12 exhibition halls with an area of more than 5,000 square meters. It is equipped with modern facilities such as electronic monitoring system, temperature and moisture control system, making it suitable for holding various exhibition of art work.

Shanghai Art Gallery, together with Shanghai Museum on the square, leads the city in art education and preservation.
