Soong Ching—ling’s Former Residence and Mausoleum

There is a Chinese woman you must know and Shanghai is the place to know her—Soong Ching — ling (1890 –1981), one of the greatest women of the 20th century.

The polite, uniformed guards standing at the gate add to the dignity of the house and its former residents. Madame Sun lived here from 1948 to 1963. The yard is surrounded by luxuriantly green camphor trees and colorful flowers, which create a tranquil atmosphere, isolating it from the noise on bustling nearby Huaihai Road (M).

The main building, a two-story white house in a boat shape, German-style, it is said, was built in the 1920s.

It had originally been the private villa of a German ship—owner. Chiang Kai—shek presented this villa to Madam Soong Ching –ling in 1948. On the site of Soong’s former garden, there is a simple structure built in 1996 to display Soong’s relics.

Soong was born in Shanghai, thought the family’s roots were in Wenchang County of Guangdong Province. She was the second daughter in a family of three sons and three daughters.

There are many pictures and items that Soong herself, her relatives and her friends once used in the museum.

Beside the garage where Soong’s two limousines are still kept, shining, there is a dovecote where Soong raised doves. She used to give the birds to foreign guests and friends as gifts and symbols of peace.
